Why I Shifted To Home Workout Over Gym Workouts

why I shifted to home workout

Many people have a lot of misconceptions about home workouts. They think a home workout can’t give them better results than a gym workout. But the thing is when done correctly home workouts can give you impressive results.

When I started my fitness journey I used to workout at the gym and then shifted to home workouts. So, I have both the experiences of home workouts and gym workouts.

In this post, you will read about some of the reasons why I shifted to home workouts instead of exercising at the gym.

7 Reasons why I switched to home workout

These are the main reasons that made me switch over to home workouts. However, I am not against working out at the gym. There are many factors and reasons for which I shifted to home workouts and below you will read why I shifted to home workouts from gym workouts.

1. Home workout saves me time

The number one reason that led me to switch over to a home workout is time constraints. Where I leave – there is no good gym nearby and to exercise at a gym I have to drive for 20-30 minutes (depending on the traffic) to go to the gym.

The 20-30 minutes driving time increases the total time it takes to complete a workout. As I prefer to workout for 30-45 minutes per session for 3-4 days a week – so in the end I have to manage 1.5 hours if I wanted to workout at the gym.

I live a busy life and I have other priorities in my life and the main reason for my workout is to stay fit and healthy. So, when I switched to home workouts It saved me at least 40 minutes per workout session.

Now I can complete my workout within 35-50 minutes. When I was exercising at the gym, the same workout took me 1 hour 30 minutes if I add the commuting time.

2. I can workout at any time

The second reason that made me switch to home workouts is – I can workout at any time during the day.

When I used to workout at the gym, most days I would go to the gym in the afternoon or during evening hours.

But when I shifted to home workouts – I could workout at any time I want.

This made my home workouts much more flexible and now I can workout whenever I get some free time.

Also, any day I can workout in the morning, during the evening or even at night.

3. I feel much more comfortable with home workouts

why i shifted to home workout

I have realised that when I workout at home – I feel much more comfortable. And I can wear any type of workout gear when I am exercising at home.

This helped me to have a better focus on my workouts. Also exercising at home reduces the amount of time it takes to prepare for a workout.

Getting ready and start exercising now takes less than 5 minutes.

4. Home workouts save money

When I shifted to home workouts, I didn’t need my gym membership anymore. Thus it saved me some money over the years.

For doing some weight lifting and some gym workouts at home I have purchased some equipment but it was a one-time purchase and I also own those equipment.

Within a year of doing home workouts, I shaved more money than I had initially spent to buy the equipment I used to do home workouts.

I have a minimal home workout setup at home. And if you are curious to know what equipment I use to do home workouts – here is a list of equipment I purchased initially:

  • One height adjustable bench with attached bench press rack.
  • One barbell with some free weights.
  • One curl bar.
  • Two weight adjustable dumbbells with some free weights.

With this equipment, I can do most gym exercises at home.

5. I can workout without worrying about the weather

Having bad weather can stop you from going to the gym. But when I switched to home workouts, the weather conditions did not affect my home workout routine anymore.

Now I can workout at any time irrespective of the outside weather.

When I used to workout at the gym, I hated to go to the gym whenever it rains. After switching over to home workouts, I no longer need to worry about whether it is raining outside or not.

6. I have fewer excuses, not to workout

If you workout for months then you will encounter a few days when you are not that motivated to exercise. It happened to me also. Generally, I try to complete at least three workout sessions in a week.

But when I used to workout at the gym it required much more willpower to finish a workout. When I shifted to home workout I didn’t have many excuses, not to workout.

For days when I don’t feel like exercising that much, I try to complete a short home workout session. Depending on the day, I workout for 10-15 minutes and mostly do bodyweight exercises like pushups, squats, jump squats, lunges, planks, crunches and burpees.

Shifting to a home workout helped me to become more consistent with my workouts.

7. I can follow any type of training method

Another reason that made me switch over to home workouts is – now I can follow any training method I like.

Sometimes following the same workout routine gets boring. And to make your workouts fun you need to change your workouts from time to time to make them fun and challenging.

Switching over to home workouts made it easy for me to follow any workout whenever I feel like I should try some different training method.

Conclusion

As long as you workout 3-4 days a week you will see good results whether you are exercising at the gym or doing home workouts.

I shifted to home workouts to save time and make my workouts flexible. After shifting to home workouts I have saved many hours that would have been spent while commuting to the gym.

In my home workout along with bodyweight exercises, I also do weight lifting so I haven’t seen any major difference between home workouts and gym workouts.

I am still able to do most gym exercises at home. But I do miss some fancy gym machines. But it didn’t impact much on my workout results.

In the end, it was my personal preference that made me switch over to home workouts. And now I have been exercising at home from 2017 onwards.

By far I enjoyed exercising at home. And maybe I would have gained a few more pounds of muscle mass if I continued working out at the gym. But it didn’t bother me that much because the main reason for my workouts is to stay fit, burn my unused calories and to maintain a healthy body weight.

So far doing home workouts helped me achieve all those fitness goals.
